How to Build an Enterprise Knowledge Assistant

A useful knowledge assistant is a retrieval system with permissions, not a chat window pointed at a public model.

Employees do not struggle because they lack a language model. They struggle because policy, product and operational knowledge lives in SharePoint libraries, shared drives, CRMs and the heads of people who are already busy. A knowledge assistant is valuable when it can answer from those sources, respect who is allowed to see them, and admit when it does not know.

The architecture is now well understood: ingest, parse, chunk, embed, retrieve, generate. The difficulty is in the details. Access control must follow the document. Chunking must preserve enough context to be useful. Evaluation must catch confident nonsense. Freshness must be operational, not a one-off import.

Start with a corpus that is trusted and a user group that will tell you when answers are wrong. Expand sources after the first path is reliable. Connecting everything on day one produces a search engine nobody trusts.
